Surprise, Ariz. – The Giants defeated the Rangers 11-8 today in front of a record crowd of 12,014 at Surprise Stadium. Ryan Vogelsong started the game for the Giants and earned the win, tossing 4.0 innings with 2 strikeouts while allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. Shane Loux earned the save, throwing 0.1-inning.
<span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri SF plated 2 runs in the top of the 1st after Pablo Sandoval tripled to score Mike Fontenot, who reached base on a fielder's choice. Sandoval was then knocked in by Cody Ross, who had a 2-out single.
The Giants scored 5 runs on 5 hits in the 4th inning. Brandon Belt knocked in Pablo Sandoval with a double to right. Nate Schierholtz, Chris Stewart and Andres Torres all singled and were driven in by Mike Fontenot, who hit a high flyball to centerfield, which fell to the ground after being lost in the sun.
SF added two more runs in the 6th after Schierholtz hit his first spring home run, a 2-run clout, giving the Giants 9-4 lead. The Giants added to their lead in the top of the 9th inning with 2 more runs to put the game away for good.
Torres finished the game with a pair of singles and Sandoval went 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and 2 runs scored. Schierholtz had a 2-for-3 day with HR and 2 RBI.
Tomorrow, the Giants host the Milwaukee Brewers at Scottsdale Stadium. The Giants will send RHP Matt Cain to the mound to face LHP Randy Wolf of the Brewers. Game time is at 1:05 p.m. and can be heard at sfgiants.com.
