Giants defeat Rangers 4-1; improve to 9-3 in Cactus League

Scottsdale, Ariz. – The Giants beat the Rangers 4-1 tonight at Scottsdale Stadium in a rematch of last year’s World Series. Jonathan Sanchez was the first Giants’ starter to reach the 4.0 inning mark, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and a walk with 5 strikeouts. Casey Daigle earned his first spring win, tossing 1.0 inning while allowing 1 hit. Jeremy Affeldt, Shane Loux and Felix Romero finished out the game, throwing a combined 4.0-scoreless innings with 5 Ks, while allowing 3 hits and no walks.

The Rangers got on the board first after Yorvit Torrealba doubled down the right field line to plate Michael Young in the 2nd frame. SF’s bats were quiet until the 5th inning when Cody Ross knocked in Freddy Sanchez and Pablo Sandoval with a single to left field, giving the Giants a 2-1 lead. Pat Burrell stepped up to the plate next and crushed a 2-run home run to right field, scoring Ross and giving the Giants a 4-1 cushion.

Burrell reached base in all 3 of his at-bats, going 2-for-2 with a walk, HR and 2 RBI. Ross had a 1-for-4 night with 2 RBI. Andres Torres, Freddy Sanchez and Pablo Sandoval each had a hit apiece.

Tomorrow, the Giants travel to Peoria Sports Complex to take on the Mariners. RHP Ryan Vogelsong will take on LHP Jason Vargas. Game time is 1:05 (12:05 p.m. PT) and can be heard on sfgiants.com.
