Giants 5-3 winners over Dodgers; improve to 7-2 in Cactus League

Glendale, Ariz. – Giants won their second game of the day today 5-3 over rival LA and moved into 1st place in the Cactus League with a record of 7-2. Barry Zito tossed 3.0 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits. Felix Romero earned the victory hurling 2.0-scoreless frames with 2 strikeouts.

The Giants took the lead in the 2nd inning after Cody Ross scored from 1st base after a Travis Ishikawa single followed by a throwing error by Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp. The Dodgers went on to tie the game in the bottom of the 2nd after loading the bases and scoring on an Ivan DeJesus 6-4-3 double play.

Thomas Neal hit a solo shot in the 5th and Buster Posey hit a solo home run in the 6th inning to extend the Giants lead. Mike Fontenot drove in Emmanuel Burris and Darren Ford on a single to left field in the 7th frame to increase the Giants lead to 5-1.

LA scored 1 run in both the 7th and 8th frames to bring the score to 5-3, however Giants reliever Jason Stoffel was called upon in the 8th with the bases loaded and 2 outs and proceeded to strike out Juan Castro to end the Dodger threat. Steve Edlefsen earned his 1st spring save as he tossed a scoreless 9th.

Tomorrow, the Giants travel to Phoenix Municipal Stadium to face the Oakland Athletics. LHP Madison Bumgarner will take on LHP Brett Anderson. Game time is 1:05 (12:05 p.m. PT) and can be heard KNBR 680 radio.
