Giants beat Rockies 7-5; Posey, Ford both HR
Scottsdale, Ariz. – The Giants beat the Rockies today at Salt River Fields by a score of 7-5. Giants’ starter Ryan Vogelsong looked impressive in his first start of Spring Training, throwing 3.0-shutout innings with no hits, 2 strikeouts and a walk to earn the win. Buster Posey continues to swing a hot bat, as he crushed a 3-1 fastball to dead center for a 2-run clout. Posey reached base in all three of his at-bats today, going 2-for-2 with a walk, single, HR and 2 RBI.
The Giants scored first in the top of the 2nd inning after Posey and Mike Fontenot singled then Emmanuel Burriss singled home Posey to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Darren Ford led off the 3rd with a solo home run, his first of the spring. The Giants led 4-0 after Posey’s 2-run blast. SF continued their offensive barrage in the 4th when Burriss tripled home Fontenot. Burriss later scored on a throwing error by Rockies second basemen Jose Lopez, extending the Giants lead to 6-0.
The Giants added another run in the 7th after Nate Schierholtz doubled down the first base line. Francisco Peguero replaced Schierholtz as a pinch-runner and was later knocked in on a Thomas Neal single to give the Giants a 7-0 lead. Alex Hinshaw struggled in the 8th, giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits. Casey Daigle pitched the 9th, earning his 3rd save of the spring.
Tomorrow, the Giants have a pair of split-squad games. First, they will host the Milwaukee Brewers at Scottsdale Stadium with Jeff Suppan facing Tim Dillard. Game time is 1:05 (12:05 p.m. PT) and can be heard at sfgiants.com.
In the second game, the Giants will travel to Camelback Ranch to take on the Dodgers. The Giants will have Barry Zito on the hill and he will face Jon Garland. Game time is 7:05 (6:05 p.m. PT).
