Bumgarner strikes out 6; Giants hit 3 HRs to beat Reds 7-0

Goodyear, Ariz. – The Giants beat the Reds 7-0 today at Goodyear Ballpark. Giants’ starter Madison Bumgarner earned his first spring win, tossing 4.0-scoreless innings with 6 strikeouts while allowing just 1 hit. SF relievers Santiago Casilla, Javier Lopez, Jeremy Affeldt, Sergio Romo and Steve Edlefsen threw a combined 5.0-scoreless innings with 6 K’s, while allowing 4 hits and 1 walk.

The Giants hit 3 home runs while plating 4 runs in the 3rd inning to take an early lead. Andres Torres hit a 2-run homer to center after Eli Whiteside drew a walk. Freddy Sanchez followed suit with a solo shot and Cody Ross hit a line drive solo home run over the left field fence. All 3 homers came off Reds’ starter Bronson Arroyo.

SF plated another run in the 6th after Pablo Sandoval doubled and was pinch-run for by Daren Ford. Ford proceeded to steal third and then took home on a throwing error by Reds’ catcher Ramon Hernandez, giving the Giants a 5-0 advantage.

The Giants scored their 6th run after Whiteside reached base after being hit by a pitch. He stole second base and was then knocked in after Emmanuel Burriss singled. SF scored their final run off Aroldis Chapman in the 8th, when Ryan Rohlinger doubled down the left field line to plate Darren Ford, who had singled to reach base.

Torres finished the day
going 1-for-3 with a HR and 2 RBI. Pat Burrell reached base in all three of his at-bats, going 2-for-2 with single, double and a walk.

Tomorrow, the Giants travel to
Peoria Sports Complex to take on the Padres. RHP Mat Latos will take the hill for the Padres and RHP Tim Lincecum with throw for the Giants. Game time is 7:05 (6:05 p.m. PT) and can be heard at sfgiants.com.
