Giants defeat D-Backs, improve to 4-2 in Cactus League

Scottsdale, Ariz. – The Giants beat the Diamondbacks tonight at Scottsdale Stadium by a score of 4-2. Giants’ starter Jonathan Sanchez earned the win, tossing 3.0 innings, striking out 3 while allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits. Marc Kroon earned his first spring save after pitching a scoreless 9th. Freddy Sanchez had his first hits of the spring, going 2-for-3 and Chris Stewart finished the game going 2-for-3 with a double, triple, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Cody Ross reached base in all three of his at-bats, going 1-for-1 with a single and a pair of walks.

Arizona got on the board first after Russell Branyan doubled, Chris Young singled then Miguel Montero singled home Branyan, giving Arizona a 1-0 lead. The Giants came back and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd when Pablo Sandoval and Nate Schierholtz singled and Stewart brought them home on a bases-clearing triple, putting the Giants on top 3-1. Arizona’s Melvin Mora scored in the top of the 3rd when Branyan singled him home, cutting the Giants lead to 3-2, but the Giants added an insurance run in the 6th after back-to-back doubles from Stewart and Charlie Culberson.

San Francisco’s bullpen was superb as Jeremy Affeldt threw 1.0-scoreless inning and Shane Loux hurled 2.0-scoreless frames with 2 punchouts. Overall, the ‘pen combined for 7.0-shutout innings with 8 strikeouts while allowing 4 hits and 2 walks.

Tomorrow, the Giants travel to Salt River Fields in Scottsdale to face the Colorado Rockies. Giants RHP Ryan Vogelsong will toe the rubber against Rockies’ LHP Jorge De La Rosa. Game time is 1:10 (12:10 p.m. PT) and can be heard at sfgiants.com.

In the first paragraph it says: “Jonathan Sanchez earned the win, tossing 3.0-shutout innings, striking out 3 while allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits.” HUH???? Did they change the rules of baseball, where a shutout is 2 runs???
